Whiplash and the Nervous System: Frequently Asked Questions
Whiplash can happen in an instant, but the effects may last much longer.
Maybe you walked away from an accident feeling shaken but otherwise okay. Then a few hours or days later, your neck became stiff. Headaches started. You felt dizzy, unusually tired, or simply not like yourself.
That's something we hear often.
Whiplash involves more than sore muscles. The rapid movement of the head and neck can place significant stress on the joints, muscles, ligaments, and nervous system. That's why we believe it's important to look beyond where it hurts and understand how your body is functioning after the injury.
At Precision Chiropractic, our goal is to listen to what you've experienced, thoroughly evaluate your nervous system and musculoskeletal function, and create an individualized plan to support your recovery.
Below are answers to some of the most common questions we hear about whiplash.
The Accident May Have Lasted Seconds. Recovery Can Take Longer.
One of the hardest parts of whiplash is that everyone else may have moved on from the accident while your body hasn't.
Maybe the car has been repaired. The insurance paperwork is finished. Life is supposed to be back to normal.
But you still don't feel like yourself.
We believe those lingering symptoms deserve to be heard and understood.
At Precision Chiropractic, we'll take the time to understand what happened, evaluate how your body and nervous system are functioning now, and help you determine what the next step in your recovery should look like.
Our hope is to help you move beyond simply getting through the day and toward feeling confident in your body again.

Whiplash is a neck injury caused by a sudden, forceful movement of the head and neck.
It's commonly associated with rear-end auto accidents, but it can also occur during sports injuries, falls, or other situations involving a rapid acceleration and deceleration of the head.
That sudden movement can place stress on the muscles, ligaments, joints, nerves, and other structures of the neck.
-
Whiplash can affect people differently. Common symptoms may include:
Neck pain or stiffness
Headaches
Shoulder or upper back pain
Muscle tightness
Reduced neck movement
Dizziness
Fatigue
Tingling or numbness
Difficulty concentrating
Sleep disturbances
Jaw discomfort
Sensitivity to light or sound
Some people experience symptoms immediately, while others don't notice them until hours or even days after the injury.

Yes.
One of the confusing things about whiplash is that you may initially feel relatively fine.
After an accident, adrenaline and the body's stress response can temporarily affect how you perceive pain. Inflammation and muscle tension may also develop over time.
This means neck pain, headaches, stiffness, dizziness, or other symptoms may not become noticeable until later that day or even several days afterward.
Feeling okay immediately after an accident doesn't always mean your body wasn't affected.
-
Yes.
The amount of visible vehicle damage doesn't necessarily tell us exactly how much force your body experienced.
Even a lower-speed collision can cause rapid movement of the head and neck. Your position at the moment of impact, direction of the collision, whether you were looking to the side, previous injuries, and other factors can all influence how your body responds.
That's why we evaluate the person, not the car.
-
Yes.
Headaches are common after whiplash.
They may be related to muscle tension, irritation of structures within the neck, changes in cervical movement, or other effects of the injury.
Because headaches after an accident can also occur with concussion or other injuries, new or persistent headaches should be properly evaluated.
-
It can.
Your ability to maintain balance depends on information coming from several systems, including your inner ear, eyes, brain, joints, muscles, and nervous system.
The neck contains sensory receptors that provide the brain with information about the position and movement of your head. Following a whiplash injury, changes in this information may contribute to dizziness or feelings of unsteadiness in some people.
Dizziness after an accident can have several possible causes, however, so a thorough evaluation is important.
-
Whiplash primarily describes an injury involving rapid movement of the neck, while a concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury caused by forces that affect the brain.
However, the same accident can cause both.
Symptoms may also overlap. Headaches, dizziness, brain fog, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, sleep changes, and sensitivity to light or sound can occur following either injury.
You also do not have to hit your head or lose consciousness to experience a concussion.
If concussion is suspected, appropriate medical evaluation is important.
-
This can be one of the most frustrating parts of recovery.
Maybe your initial imaging didn't show a major injury, but you're still experiencing headaches, fatigue, dizziness, neck tension, difficulty concentrating, or just a sense that your body hasn't returned to normal.
An accident is a significant physical stressor. Beyond the muscles and joints, your nervous system also has to process and adapt to what happened.
That's why our evaluation doesn't stop at asking where you hurt. We want to understand how your nervous system and body are functioning after the injury and whether there are areas that may need additional support.
-
Chiropractic care may be one component of recovery for some people following a whiplash injury.
At Precision Chiropractic, we begin with a thorough history and examination to understand what happened during the accident, what symptoms you've experienced since, and how your nervous system and musculoskeletal system are functioning now.
Rather than simply focusing on the painful area, Neuro-Tonal Chiropractic looks at communication between the brain, nervous system, and body and how effectively your system is adapting following the injury.
When appropriate, your individualized care plan may include gentle Neuro-Tonal Chiropractic adjustments along with supportive therapies such as Class 3B cold laser therapy, Stimpod therapy, or vagal nerve stimulation based on your examination findings.
Our goal is to support your recovery, improve function, and help your body move forward rather than simply helping you temporarily get through the discomfort.
-
After an accident, it's tempting to focus only on the area that hurts.
Pain matters, but it doesn't always tell the entire story.
Neuro-Tonal Chiropractic takes a broader look at how the nervous system is functioning and adapting after an injury. We evaluate your history, symptoms, neurological function, spinal movement, and other findings to better understand the effects the accident may have had on your body.
Your care is then tailored to those findings.
We don't believe everyone involved in an auto accident needs the exact same adjustment or treatment plan. The forces involved, previous injuries, symptoms, health history, and nervous system response are different for every patient.
Your care should reflect that.
-
Depending on your examination findings, we may incorporate supportive therapies alongside Neuro-Tonal Chiropractic care.
These may include:
Class 3B Cold Laser Therapy
Cold laser therapy uses specific wavelengths of light and may be incorporated to support tissue function and recovery as part of an individualized care plan.
Stimpod Therapy
Stimpod therapy uses non-invasive electrical stimulation and may be recommended in certain cases based on your symptoms and examination findings.
Vagal Nerve Stimulation
Because an accident can be a significant stressor for the nervous system, vagal nerve stimulation may be incorporated when appropriate to support autonomic nervous system regulation.
Not every patient needs every therapy. Recommendations are based on what we find during your evaluation and what is appropriate for your individual recovery.
-
Safety comes first.
Before recommending chiropractic care, we complete a thorough consultation and examination and review the circumstances surrounding your injury.
Our Neuro-Tonal approach is gentle, specific, and individualized based on your current condition and comfort level.
If your symptoms or examination findings indicate that imaging, medical evaluation, or another specialist is needed before beginning care, we'll make that recommendation.
We want to make sure you're receiving the right care, even when that means another provider needs to be involved.
-
Not everyone with whiplash requires X-rays.
Whether imaging is appropriate depends on factors such as the mechanism of injury, your symptoms, examination findings, age, medical history, and whether there are concerns about fracture or other structural injury.
At Precision Chiropractic, digital X-rays are available for adults when clinically appropriate. If other imaging, such as CT or MRI, may be needed, we can recommend that you follow up with the appropriate medical provider.
-
Some symptoms after an accident require urgent medical evaluation.
Seek immediate medical care if you experience symptoms such as:
Loss of consciousness
New or worsening confusion
Severe or rapidly worsening headache
Repeated vomiting
Seizure
Significant weakness or numbness
Difficulty speaking
Severe balance problems
New vision changes
Significant chest or abdominal pain
When in doubt after a significant injury, seeking medical evaluation is always appropriate.
-
Pain isn't the only indicator of how your body responded to an accident.
Some symptoms are delayed, and others may initially show up as stiffness, fatigue, headaches, dizziness, sleep changes, or difficulty concentrating rather than significant pain.
If you've been involved in an accident and something doesn't feel right, an evaluation can help you better understand what's happening and determine whether additional care is appropriate.
-
If you have significant symptoms or concerns about a serious injury, seek medical attention immediately.
For non-emergency concerns, you don't necessarily need to wait until pain becomes severe before being evaluated.
Early evaluation can help identify how the injury has affected your movement and nervous system function and determine whether chiropractic care or another type of care may be appropriate.
Even if your accident happened weeks or months ago, it's still worth having ongoing symptoms evaluated.
-
We start by listening.
We'll talk about how the accident happened, where you were positioned, what you experienced immediately afterward, and what symptoms have developed since.
We'll also review your health history, previous injuries, imaging, and any care you've already received.
From there, we perform a neurological evaluation and chiropractic examination. Digital X-rays may be taken when clinically appropriate.
Once we understand the bigger picture, we'll explain our findings and discuss the next steps we believe make sense for your recovery.
-
Your first visit is about understanding your story.
We'll discuss when your migraines began, how often they occur, what they feel like, known triggers, medications, previous injuries, sleep, stress, and how migraines are affecting your everyday life.
From there, we perform a neurological evaluation and chiropractic examination to better understand how your nervous system is functioning.
Based on those findings, we'll discuss whether Neuro-Tonal Chiropractic is appropriate and what an individualized care plan could look like.
-
There isn't one recovery timeline that applies to everyone.
Some people improve relatively quickly, while others experience symptoms for weeks or months. The severity of the injury, previous injuries, overall health, concussion involvement, sleep, stress, and other factors can all influence recovery.
We don't measure progress by pain alone.
We also look at movement, function, nervous system regulation, activity tolerance, and your ability to return to the things you need and want to do.
Our goal is not simply to help you feel temporarily better. It's to support meaningful recovery and help your body function well again.
-
It's not too late to ask questions.
We regularly see people who expected their symptoms to resolve with time but are still dealing with headaches, neck pain, dizziness, stiffness, fatigue, or other changes months after an injury.
Persistent symptoms deserve to be taken seriously.
A thorough evaluation can help identify factors that may still be contributing to what you're experiencing and determine whether our approach or another healthcare provider may be appropriate.
-
If you've experienced an auto accident, fall, sports injury, or another event involving a sudden movement of your head and neck and you still don't feel like yourself, we'd encourage you to listen to that.
You don't need to wait until your symptoms become severe.
A complimentary consultation gives you an opportunity to tell us what happened, ask questions, and learn whether a neurological evaluation and Neuro-Tonal Chiropractic care may be appropriate for your recovery.
