Sometimes these behaviors can be confusing, especially when everyday experiences seem to affect your child much more intensely than other children.
But what looks like difficult behavior on the outside may actually be a nervous system working incredibly hard to process what's happening around it.
At Precision Chiropractic, we want parents to understand the child behind the behavior. Sensory processing is closely connected to the nervous system, and understanding how your child's brain receives, organizes, and responds to sensory information can provide valuable insight into what they may be experiencing.

When your child struggles with things that seem effortless for other kids, it can be hard for everyone.
But underneath the meltdowns, sensitivities, constant movement, or big reactions is a child doing their best to navigate a world that may feel very different to them.
We want to help you understand what's happening beneath the behavior.

Sensory processing is the way the brain receives, organizes, and responds to information coming from the body and the environment.
Every second, your child's nervous system is receiving information about sounds, sights, smells, touch, movement, body position, and what's happening internally.
The brain has to decide which information is important, which information can be filtered out, and how the body should respond.
For many children, this happens without much effort. For a child with sensory processing challenges, the nervous system may have difficulty organizing or responding appropriately to that information.

Most of us learned about five senses, but the nervous system processes much more than sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch.
Important sensory systems include:
Visual: What your child sees
Auditory: What your child hears
Tactile: Touch, textures, clothing, temperature, and pressure
Olfactory: Smell
Gustatory: Taste
Vestibular: Movement, balance, and the body's relationship to gravity
Proprioceptive: Awareness of where the body is in space
Interoceptive: Awareness of what's happening inside the body, such as hunger, thirst, temperature, or the need to use the bathroom
These systems work together constantly to help a child understand their body and environment.

Sensory challenges can look very different from one child to another.
You may notice your child:
Covers their ears around loud noises
Is bothered by clothing tags, seams, socks, or certain fabrics
Avoids certain food textures
Dislikes having their hair washed, brushed, or cut
Becomes overwhelmed in crowded or busy environments
Avoids swings, climbing, or playground equipment
Constantly jumps, spins, crashes, or climbs
Chews on clothing, pencils, or other objects
Seeks tight hugs or heavy pressure
Has difficulty sitting still
Seems unusually sensitive to smells
Has strong reactions to unexpected touch
Struggles with transitions
Becomes overwhelmed or melts down after busy days
These behaviors aren't necessarily a child being difficult. Sometimes they're clues about what that child's nervous system is experiencing.

Some children need more sensory input in order to feel organized and regulated.
A sensory-seeking child may constantly move, jump, spin, climb, crash into furniture, chew objects, touch everything, or seek deep pressure.
It can sometimes look like hyperactivity or impulsivity from the outside.
In reality, the child may be seeking additional sensory information because their nervous system needs more input to understand where their body is and feel regulated.

Sensory avoidance happens when certain types of sensory information feel overwhelming or uncomfortable.
A sensory-avoidant child may cover their ears, avoid crowded places, refuse certain clothes or foods, dislike being touched, or become upset by lights, smells, or movement.
Something that barely registers for one child may feel incredibly intense to another.
Understanding this difference can completely change the way we respond to a child's behavior.

Sensory overload happens when the nervous system receives more information than it can comfortably process at one time.
Think of it like too many tabs being open on a computer. Eventually, the system has difficulty keeping up.
For a child, sensory overload might happen at school, a birthday party, a busy restaurant, a sporting event, or even after holding it together all day.
You may see crying, yelling, shutting down, running away, covering the ears, becoming unusually irritable, or having what looks like a meltdown.
The behavior you see may actually be the nervous system communicating, "This is more than I can handle right now."

Not necessarily.
A tantrum is typically connected to wanting or avoiding something and often changes when the child gets what they want.
A sensory meltdown happens when a child's nervous system becomes overwhelmed. At that point, they may have very little ability to regulate their emotional or physical response.
During a meltdown, the goal isn't simply to stop the behavior. Helping the child feel safe and reducing sensory demands can be much more helpful.

This is something we hear from parents often.
Some children work incredibly hard throughout the day to manage noise, transitions, social expectations, classroom demands, and sensory input.
By the time they get home, their nervous system may have very little capacity left.
Home is also often where children feel safest, so it may be the place where they finally release everything they've been holding together.
Understanding this can help parents look at those after-school meltdowns through a very different lens.

They can be.
Sensory processing differences are commonly seen in children with autism and ADHD, but a child does not need either diagnosis to experience sensory challenges.
Children with developmental delays, anxiety, retained primitive reflexes, or other neurological differences may also experience sensory processing difficulties.
This is one reason we believe it's important to evaluate the individual child rather than focusing only on a diagnosis.

Yes.
A nervous system that has difficulty filtering and regulating sensory input during the day may also have difficulty transitioning into a calm state at night.
Some children seem exhausted but simply can't settle. Others are sensitive to pajamas, sheets, sounds, room temperature, or small environmental changes.
Sleep challenges can have many causes, but nervous system regulation is an important piece of the bigger picture.

Sensory processing and emotional regulation are closely connected.
Imagine trying to stay calm while the lights feel too bright, someone's voice feels too loud, your clothes feel uncomfortable, and you're struggling to understand where your body is in space.
For some children, that can be everyday life.
When the nervous system is already using significant resources to process sensory information, there may be less capacity available to handle frustration, transitions, unexpected changes, or emotional stress.
This is why we often encourage parents to look beyond the behavior and ask, "What might my child's nervous system be trying to tell me?"

Primitive reflexes are automatic movement patterns that begin developing before birth and play an important role in early brain and nervous system development.
As a child's nervous system matures, these reflexes should gradually integrate and make way for more advanced movement and neurological patterns.
When certain primitive reflexes remain active longer than expected, they may be associated with challenges involving balance, coordination, posture, attention, motor planning, and sensory processing.

Absolutely.
Occupational therapy can play an important role in helping children with sensory processing challenges develop strategies and skills for everyday life.
Many of the children we care for also work with occupational therapists, speech therapists, physical therapists, pediatricians, developmental specialists, counselors, and other healthcare professionals.
We view Neuro-Tonal Chiropractic as one potential piece of a larger support system for your child, not a replacement for the other care they may need.

The first thing we do is listen.
We want to understand what you're seeing at home, at school, and in everyday life. We'll discuss your child's health history, pregnancy and birth history, developmental milestones, sensory concerns, sleep, emotional regulation, and the goals you have for your child.
From there, we perform a gentle neurological evaluation and chiropractic examination. When appropriate, we may also assess primitive reflexes and other areas of neurological development.
Most importantly, we meet your child where they are. We don't expect every child to walk through the door ready to participate in everything on the first visit.
Our goal is to understand the whole child and make sure both you and your child feel heard and comfortable.

Every child's nervous system is different, and progress rarely follows a perfectly straight line.
Some parents begin noticing small changes relatively early, while other children need more time for their nervous system to adapt. Age, developmental history, sensory needs, overall health, stress, sleep, and how long certain patterns have been present can all influence progress.
We also encourage parents to look beyond one specific behavior. Sometimes meaningful progress shows up in small ways first, such as handling a transition differently, recovering more easily after becoming overwhelmed, sleeping more consistently, or simply having greater capacity for everyday life.
Our goal isn't a quick fix. It's to support a stronger, more adaptable nervous system as your child continues to grow and develop.
