Your brain continuously receives information from several systems, including:

This is an important distinction.
Your brain relies on information from your eyes, inner ear, muscles, joints, and peripheral nerves to maintain balance.
If one of these systems isn't providing clear information, you may feel unsteady even though nothing is spinning and you don't feel lightheaded.
For example, reduced sensation in the feet from neuropathy may make it harder for the brain to know exactly where the feet are positioned. Vision changes, previous injuries, muscle weakness, or problems processing vestibular information can also affect stability.
Sometimes "I just don't feel steady" is the best description, and that's still valuable information.

You don't have to look at your feet to know where they're positioned because receptors throughout your muscles, joints, and connective tissues are constantly sending that information to your brain.

Your neck contains sensory receptors that constantly provide your brain with information about the position and movement of your head.
That information has to coordinate with signals coming from your eyes and inner ear.
Following certain neck injuries, particularly whiplash, the information coming from these systems may not integrate as efficiently. Some people may experience dizziness, unsteadiness, or a feeling of being "off."
Balance problems after a neck injury can have multiple causes, so proper evaluation is important.

Your brain normally uses vision as one source of information to help maintain balance. When you close your eyes or walk through a dark room, that visual information is reduced.

POTS can cause lightheadedness, weakness, shakiness, dizziness, and near-fainting when upright, all of which may make someone feel unstable.
This is somewhat different from a traditional balance disorder because the symptoms are related to the autonomic nervous system and the body's response to being upright.
If your unsteadiness happens primarily after standing, is accompanied by a racing heart, or improves when you lie down, that pattern is important.

Sudden balance problems can sometimes be a sign of a serious medical condition.
